Shadows at Dawn
By Tonkix

The building slept under the thick veil of dawn, that silent interval when even the city’s noises seemed to hold their breath. The streetlights cast elongated shadows across the garage’s asphalt, creating a slow-moving play of light and dark, as if time itself had slowed down there. The air was heavy with the scent of burnt oil and damp concrete—a mix that, under any other circumstance, would have been unpleasant, but at that hour, it seemed part of an almost dreamlike atmosphere. The parking spaces, marked with worn white paint, were nearly all occupied, save for a few reserved for residents who hadn’t yet arrived or who, like her, had left early.
Cláudia adjusted the strap of her bag on her shoulder as she walked toward her car, the thin heels of her shoes echoing in the empty space. She had spent the night awake—first in an endless meeting with international clients, then at a dinner that stretched until nearly midnight. Fatigue weighed on her shoulders, but there was also a kind of residual adrenaline, that sensation of her body not yet having fully processed the day behind her. As she neared her vehicle, her fingers trembled slightly as she dug for her keys at the bottom of her bag, an automatic gesture that, tonight, seemed to require more effort than usual.
That was when she saw him. Or rather, she *felt* his presence before even turning her head. A figure moved between the concrete columns, his tall, broad silhouette outlined against the dim light of an emergency lamp. The security guard’s navy-blue uniform, with its embroidered logo on the chest, stood out in the dark, but it was the details that caught her attention: the way his shoulders filled out the fabric, the firm way his arms hung at his sides, as if always ready to act. He stood beside one of the security cameras, his eyes fixed on the screen of a small portable monitor, but something in the air made Cláudia instinctively know he had already noticed her.
— Good evening — his voice was deep, slightly rough, as if he had spent hours in silence before speaking. He didn’t turn immediately, but his tone was casual, almost disinterested, as if he were used to greeting residents at any hour.
Cláudia hesitated for a second, surprised she hadn’t heard him before he spoke. — Good evening — she replied, trying to keep her tone light, though she felt an unexpected warmth rise in her neck. She finally found her keys and pulled them out with a faint jingle, but she didn’t make a move to open the car door. Instead, she watched him for another moment, as if trying to decipher something unspoken.
— Working late? — he asked, now turning to face her. His eyes were dark, nearly black in the dim light, and there was an intensity in them that made Cláudia hold her breath for a second. He took a step forward, closing the distance between them, and she could see the outline of his jaw, the shadow of stubble that gave his face a controlled air of dishevelment.
— Yeah — she answered, glancing away for a moment before meeting his gaze again. — And you? Don’t you usually have someone on the night shift?
— Usually — he said, tilting his head slightly. — But my coworker asked me to cover his shift today. Family issues.
Cláudia nodded, as if the answer made perfect sense, though it didn’t. There was something in the way he spoke, in the way his eyes never left hers, that unsettled her. She should get in the car, start the engine, and leave. That’s what she would do on any other night. But something kept her there, rooted in place, as if waiting for something she couldn’t even define.
— How long have you lived here? — he asked, taking another step forward. Now, the distance between them was minimal, just enough for her to feel the heat of his body, a contrast to the garage’s cold air.
— Two years — she answered, swallowing hard. — And you?
— Almost one — he said, pausing as if weighing whether to continue. — But I’ve only seen you a few times. Usually in passing.
Cláudia let out a soft laugh, a sound that came out more nervous than she intended. — I travel a lot. And when I’m here, I usually leave early and come back late.
— I see — he murmured, his eyes dropping for a moment to her lips before returning to hers. — So it’s rare to find you like this. Alone.
Cláudia’s heart raced, and she felt her blood pulse stronger in her veins. There was something in those words, in the way he said them, that made her wonder if he was just stating a fact or if there was something more behind it. She should leave. She should open the car door, get in, and drive away before things spiraled out of control. But her feet seemed glued to the ground, and her curiosity, mixed with an excitement she didn’t want to admit, kept her there.
— Yeah — she said finally, her voice lower than she intended. — But tonight, it seems I’m not the only one.
He smiled then, a slow, almost imperceptible smile, but it made something tighten in Cláudia’s stomach. — No — he agreed. — Tonight, you’re not.
The silence that followed was charged, as if both knew something was about to happen, but neither wanted to be the first to make a move. Cláudia felt the weight of his gaze on her, as if every inch of her skin were being examined, touched without contact. She took a deep breath, trying to calm herself, but the air felt thicker, as if charged with electricity.
— Do you always watch residents this closely? — she asked, trying to break the tension, but the question came out more provocative than she intended.
He tilted his head, as if considering his answer. — Only when it’s worth it — he said finally, his tone so direct that Cláudia felt a shiver run down her spine.
She didn’t answer. Instead, she took a step forward, closing the distance between them even more. Now, she could smell him—a mix of neutral soap and something else, something warm and masculine that made her body react in a way she hadn’t expected. Their eyes met again, and for a moment, she felt as if he could see right through her, as if he knew exactly what was going through her mind.
— And what makes you decide if it’s worth it or not? — she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
He didn’t answer right away. Instead, he reached out, as if to touch her face, but stopped halfway, his fingers hovering in the air between them. Cláudia held her breath, waiting, hoping he would close the distance. And then, he did. His fingers brushed lightly against her cheek, a touch so soft she almost thought she’d imagined it, but the sensation was real, warm, and made her entire body tingle.
— This — he murmured, his voice even rougher than before. — The way you look at me. Like you’re trying to decide whether to run or stay.
Cláudia felt her heart beat faster, and a wave of heat spread through her body. She knew she should step back, that this was going too far, but she couldn’t. She didn’t want to. There was something about this man, about this situation, that drew her in a way she couldn’t explain. Maybe it was the danger, the idea that they were doing something forbidden, or maybe it was just him—the way her body reacted to his without her being able to control it.
— And if I said I still haven’t decided? — she asked, her voice trembling.
He smiled again, and this time, the smile was wider, more confident. — Then I guess I’ll have to convince you to stay.
Before she could respond, he closed the distance between them, his hands cupping her face with a firmness that surprised her. His lips found hers, and the kiss was anything but gentle. It was urgent, hungry, as if he had been holding back for a long time and had finally found an outlet. Cláudia felt her entire body respond, her lips parting for him, her hands instinctively rising to grip his arms, feeling the strength of his muscles beneath the uniform’s fabric.
The kiss deepened, and she felt his tongue explore her mouth, hot and insistent. One of his hands slid to the nape of her neck, his fingers tangling in her hair, while the other moved down the side of her body, stopping at the curve of her waist. Cláudia moaned softly against his lips, the sound muffled by the intensity of the kiss, and felt his body press hers against the car. The cold metal at her back contrasted with the heat radiating from him, and she arched instinctively, seeking more contact.
He pulled his lips from hers for a moment, just enough to murmur against her mouth: — Do you have any idea what you do to me?
Cláudia couldn’t answer. She couldn’t speak. Instead, she pulled him back, their lips meeting again in an even more intense kiss. His hands now explored her body with more boldness, sliding down her back, gripping the curve of her hips, as if he were trying to memorize every inch of her. She felt his fingers brush against the hem of her blouse, and then, with a quick movement, he pulled it up, exposing the bare skin of her stomach.
— Fuck — he murmured, his voice rough, as his fingers traced slow circles on her skin. — You’re so soft.
Cláudia gasped as he lowered his head, his lips replacing his fingers, kissing and nipping at the sensitive skin of her stomach. She felt her knees weaken, and she would have fallen if not for his body pressing hers against the car. Her hands tangled in his hair, pulling him closer, while he continued to explore her body with his mouth, leaving a trail of heat wherever he touched.
— Do you like that? — he asked, his voice muffled against her skin, as his fingers slid to the back of her pants, gripping her ass firmly.
— Yes — she answered, her voice trembling. — More.
He chuckled softly, a dark, satisfied sound, and then his hands were at the button of her pants, undoing it with ease. Cláudia felt the garage’s cold air touch her skin as he pulled her pants and panties down, leaving her exposed from the waist down. She should have felt vulnerable, but instead, she felt powerful, desired in a way she had never experienced before.
He didn’t waste time. One hand slid between her legs, his fingers finding the exact spot where she needed to be touched. Cláudia moaned loudly, the sound echoing in the empty garage, and her nails dug into his shoulders. He watched her as he touched her, his dark eyes fixed on hers, as if he wanted to memorize every reaction.
— You’re so beautiful like this — he murmured, his fingers moving in slow circles, pressing and exploring. — So wet just for me.
Cláudia felt her entire body tremble, her breath coming in short gasps. She had never felt so exposed, so vulnerable, and yet so aroused. Her legs shook, and she knew she wouldn’t last much longer like this, with him touching her, watching her, as if she were the most delicious thing he had ever tasted.
— Please — she begged, her voice almost a moan. — I need...
— What do you need? — he asked, his fingers pausing for a moment, making her whimper in frustration.
— You — she answered without hesitation. — Inside me.
He didn’t need any more encouragement. With a quick movement, he lifted her, her legs automatically wrapping around his waist. Cláudia felt the rough fabric of his uniform against the inside of her thighs, and then the hot, firm pressure of him against her. She moaned loudly as he entered her, her body adjusting to his in a fluid motion, as if they were made for each other.
— Fuck — he growled, his lips finding hers again in a hungry kiss. — You’re so tight.
Cláudia couldn’t respond. Instead, she dug her nails into his back as he began to move, his hips thrusting hard, each stroke deeper than the last. She felt her entire body tremble, the sensation of being filled by him almost too much to bear. The sounds escaping her throat were primal, instinctive, and she no longer cared about anything but the feeling of him inside her, the heat spreading through her body, the way he held her so firmly, as if he would never let her fall.
— That’s it — he murmured against her ear, his voice rough. — Come for me.
The words were enough. Cláudia felt her entire body contract, an intense, overwhelming orgasm taking hold of her. She cried out, the sound echoing in the garage, as he continued to move, prolonging the sensation, as if he wanted to extract every drop of pleasure from her body.
When he finally stopped, he held her tightly, their bodies still joined, their breaths coming in short gasps. Cláudia rested her head on his shoulder, feeling his heart beat rapidly against her chest. She couldn’t believe what had just happened, but at the same time, she didn’t regret it. Not yet.
He set her down carefully, his fingers still gripping her waist, as if he didn’t want to let go. Cláudia looked at him, trying to decipher the expression on his face, but he was serious, his dark eyes fixed on hers, as if evaluating something.
— That was... — she began, but didn’t know how to finish the sentence.
— Intense — he completed, his voice still rough. — And it shouldn’t have happened.
Cláudia felt a chill in her stomach. — Then why did it?
He didn’t answer right away. Instead, he leaned in, his lips brushing her ear as he murmured: — Because I’ve wanted you since the first time I saw you.
Before she could respond, he stepped back, picking up her pants from the floor and handing them to her with a quick gesture. — Get dressed — he said, his voice now colder, professional. — I can’t be here when you leave.
Cláudia felt a pang of disappointment, but she obeyed, dressing quickly as he moved away, returning to the security cameras. She watched him for a moment, trying to understand what had just happened, but the words wouldn’t come. Instead, she grabbed her car keys and got in, starting the engine with trembling hands.
As she drove out of the garage, she glanced in the rearview mirror and saw him standing in the same spot, his eyes fixed on her. And then, he raised his hand in a slow wave, as if he knew she would be looking.
Cláudia accelerated, feeling her heart beat faster than ever. She didn’t know what it meant, or what would happen next, but one thing was certain: she wouldn’t be able to get this man out of her head anytime soon. And, for the first time in a long time, she didn’t want to.
